Get To All Of Your Home With A Stair Lift
A stair lift in your home can be a welcome relief when you're bound to just one floor. It's especially difficult when you're not bound to a wheelchair and still able to move room to room. Much easier and simpler to install than putting in an elevator and far more economical, a stair lift can put you back into parts of your home that have become inaccessible. Being temporarily disabled or having a handicap will no longer stop you from enjoying your home.
There are many different manufacturers of stair lifts available to you. Three more popular are Acorn, Bruno, and Ameriglide. Some will work directly with you but many have vendors representing them that that they will refer you to. Some vendors will represent more than one line or manufacturer and if you can find one in your area can make comparing models easier. There are also many dealers that sell used lifts as well.
Ordering a stair-lift will involve measuring your staircase. Some manufacturers will require an on site inspection from one of their representatives. Other manufacturers will provide guidelines and diagrams for measuring that you or someone you trust can perform.
Warranties will vary between manufacturers. Typically the drive train will be warranted for longer than the components such as control box, seat, etc. Drive train warranties range from 5 years to lifetime. Components such as chairs and control boxes typically are for a year sometimes longer. Again warranties are manufacturer dependant
As with all warranties they do have limitations. They do not cover acts of God such as flood damage or lightning strikes. Nor do they cover abuse such as overloading with weight greater than rated or a child spilling soda on the controls.
Prices start somewhere around $1500 and the price increases with size, sophistication, and installation options. Curved stairs will further increase the price.
Stairlifts are available that you can install yourself with minimal help. Typically these types are secured to the steps and landings. More complex stairways such as a constant curve may require anchoring to the wall. Most if not all manufacturers have reps available to provide installation for you.
There are some things to consider when thinking about self installation. The Accessibility Equipment Manufacturer's Association (AEMA) does not recommend self installation. Many municipalities have codes and ordnances that regulate elevators and that may include stair lifts. These codes may restrict who can install your lift. Also options such as tethered AC may require a licensed electrician to service or install. If the system is to be secured to the wall a licensed contractor may be required as well. Please make sure to check with your local government agency.
Speak with more than one manufacturer and representative about your needs. The reps for each company will be knowledgeable about their product and should ask you specific questions about your needs and abilities. Be sure to take your own notes when speaking with the rep and ask questions about warranties, service, installation, and options. After you have gathered information about two or more stair lifts, you will be able to make better decisions on which lift to buy.
